Programs
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is a private, non-profit organization whose purpose is to provide assistance and support through established programs in local communities throughout the world. A sisterhood of more than 200,000 predominately Black college educated women, the Sorority currently has over 900 chapters located in the United States, England, Japan (Tokyo and Okinawa), Germany, the Virgin Islands, Bermuda, the Bahamas and the Republic of Korea. The major programs of the sorority are based upon the organization’s Five Point Programmatic Thrust:

The Financial Fortitude initiative is comprised of ten components and provides a collaboration of information from major economic corporations and other well-known financial institutions. The ten components include: Goal Setting, Financial Planning, Budgeting, Debt Management, Savings & Investments, Retirement Planning, Homeownership, Insurance, Estate Planning, and Entrepreneurship. The initiative helps members of the Sorority spread financial education throughout their local communities.

Arts and Letters
The mission of the Arts & Letters Committee of the Kansas City Missouri Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is directly aligned with our National Commission on Arts and Letters established in 1973.
Our committee works to boldly advance the black experience through arts and letters and to promote the contributions of African Americans in the arts—past and present. The Arts and Letters Committee is responsible for fostering a positive image of African Americans and providing artistic and cultural outlets for chapter members and our local community through the mediums of music, dance, drama, literature, poetry, and visual arts. The Committee promotes worthwhile cultural endeavors and artists through events such as book club discussions, theater parties, concerts, arts in the schools, artist showcases and red carpet events.
We are dedicated to preserving, supporting, communicating and projecting all art forms that express the black experience through artistic expression, as it relates to promoting the creative works of African American artists, particularly those of women.
Community Action
The Community Action Committee is dedicated to supporting the Programmatic Thrust of the Sorority through service to the Greater Kansas City Metropolitan area. This committee works to serve the needs of the local community, and we partner with other organizations to ensure our impact is felt. Community Action participates in a number of events throughout the sorority year.
In conjunction with other chapter committees, Community Action ensures that the mission of our organization is upheld.
Delta Academy
The Dr. Betty Shabazz Delta Academy is a program that caters to young women who are currently in the 6th through 8th grade. The program offers mentoring, educational activities, and service learning opportunities to the participants.
The Delta Academy program’s major emphasis is mathematics, science, and technology, and helps young women to excel and pursue careers in these areas. Anchored in the basic tenets of the Sorority, Sisterhood, Scholarship and Service, the Delta Academy also features a Book Club for the girls and health education components.

Delta GEMS
2023 – 2024 academic year applications for Delta GEMS are now open!
Delta G.E.M.S. (Growing and Empowering Myself Successfully) was created to “catch the dreams of African American adolescent girls in 9th – 12th grades”, and is a natural continuation of the highly successful Dr. Betty Shabazz Delta Academy. Delta GEMS provides the framework to actualize those dreams through the performance of specific tasks that develop a CAN DO attitude.
- Delta GEMS:
Serves the greater Kansas City Missouri area. - Meets the 2nd Saturday of each month (November – April) from 10 am – 12 pm
- Gives back to the community through service.
The goals of Delta GEMS are:
To instill the need to excel academically;
- To provide tools that enable girls to sharpen and enhance their skills to achieve high levels of academic success;
- To assist girls in proper goal setting and planning for their high school futures and beyond; and
- To create compassionate, caring, and community-minded young women by actively involving them in service learning and community service opportunities.
Five major components of the Delta GEMS framework:
- Scholarship

- Show Me the Money
- Service
- Infinitely Complete
Combined these components form a roadmap for college and career planning. Topics within the five major components are designed to provide interactive lessons and activities that provide opportunities for self-reflection and individual growth. Delta GEMS participants have the opportunity to define and “discover their individual brilliance.”

EMBODI
The EMBODI (Empowering Males to Build Opportunities for Developing Independence) program is designed to refocus the efforts of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, to strengthen their outreach youth programs and to collaborate with other organizations to address the plight of African American males.
Both informal and empirical data suggests that the vast majority of African American males continue to be in crisis and are not reaching their fullest potential educationally, socially and emotionally. EMBODI is designed to address these issues through dialogue and recommendations for change and action.
EMBODI:
- Serves boys 6th – 11th grades.
- Ages 11 – 17 in the greater Kansas City area
- Meets the 2nd Saturday of every month (November thru April),
- Time: 10am-noon
- Gives back to the community through service.

Social Action
The Social Action committee promotes leadership, advocacy, and empowerment to effect social change and public policy. We are the vehicle through which the Sorority establishes a position on an emerging or perennial public issue, determines the action to be taken, and directs the actions of our members. The committee implements projects and programs that stimulate social action and educate members and the community on current issues.
Social Action Committee Goals:
To keep the community informed of current local and national issues, so as to be effective citizens and advocates; To encourage political awareness and participation in events, issues and concerns of the African American community. To foster increased elections or appointments of African American women in governmental policy-making positions, nationally and locally. To develop an appreciation within the African-American community of its influence, especially among its women; To encourage endorsement of legislation, national and locally, with particular interest to African Americans and women; To be knowledgeable of the accomplishments or inaction by local judicial and administrative agencies and officials; To volunteer as leaders in civic and social action organizations.
